Why 1:1?
Why is it Good for Students?
Why Are We 'Obligated' to Do Our Best?
And Why Should We Do It For Ourselves and Our Classrooms?
Why is 1:1 technology good for students and taking the education world by storm? Because not only research but students, parents and TEACHERS are RAVING about it once they adapt it to their own classroom environment. Online texbooks that can include video, screencasting, and other proven instructional methods are only the BEGINNING. Flipping the classroom provides for natural UDL or Universal Design for Learning which allows students to learn at their own pace with repeated exposure to concepts they do not understand the first time around. In addition, PBL (Project Based Learning) and WAC (Writing Across the Curriculum) is EASY when technology becomes involved and students, teachers, classrooms and schools are connected to the WORLD. Edmodo, Quizlet, Voicethread, Moodle, TED, the Flipped Classroom, Socrative, TurnItIn, Remind101, Screencasting and many more free Web 2.0 tools can revolutionize education as we know it for those districts lucky enough to have access to 1:1 technology for students. Why is 1:1 good for schools? Join the worldwide community of educators learning, collaborating and benefiting from 1:1 in their district.

Web Pages allow teachers to sustain a web presence for their students and parents alike. Weebly not only makes creating professional looking web pages easy, it improves communication and reduces work loads. Handouts, messages, interesting resources and more can be shared via Weebly. With all the online resources available, we sometimes forget the one resource that students and parents often see FIRST and the MOST with no logins required. Using a new online tool such as edmodo is great but what if it goes down and where do your parents go before they discover edmodo? Your Webpage should be a representation of YOU and your classroom. Is it? Using Weebly, Google Sites or many more online tools that are available, you can add WOW! to your Webpage and be proud of the 'online presence' of your classroom.

What Everyone Ought to Know about Works Cited
Creating a works sited page does not involve copy and paste from a URL/web address although most high school students would love if it did. In order to prepare Kingsford High School students for a future in which they need to correctly cite sources, our school should be consistent in requiring a proper MLA and/or ALA works cited page. With the new Core Curriculum coming and teachers being encouraged to write across all disciplines, this should be important to you as a teacher. But how do you require them to create these kinds of pages when you aren't sure how to do it yourself anymore? And how do you use the new digital resources in a way that helps their growth and development and prepares them for their future requirements? Attend this session to find out!

- How can technology be integrated into this task while still retaining a proper Works Cited/Bibliography page?

Excellent Quotes on Flipped/Shifted:
Brian Bennett - The Flipped Classroom is a mindset, not a method.
Aaron Sams - There is no such thing as THE flipped classroom.
Ramsey Musallam - “There is no pedagogy, technology or technique that is a silver bullet or the independent variable for good teaching. . . No technology can make the honor of being a teacher an easier thing. Techniques, pedagogies, etc. can make what we do more efficient, but only if we first, through hours and hours of sweat, empathy and failure, work towards a system that transcends technology.”
Brett Clarke - “Flipping the classroom is not the answer to solving all of the flaws in our education system. However, neither is doing nothing and continuing on like nothing is wrong.”
Aaron and Brian - “Ultimately, flipped learning is not about flipping the 'when and where' instruction is delivered; it's about flipping the attention away from the teacher and toward the learner.”
Paul Andersen - “The teacher is the most important part of a functioning classroom . . . Just because you create videos doesn’t mean you are teaching them . . . ‘teacher’ implies learning and if you are not getting learning you’re not a teacher, you’re simply at ‘talker’.”
Levels of flipping: 1. review & remediation (content 'filter' & curator and/or digital 'face of your classroom'), 2. flipping - same considerations as review, model, model, model & potty training on how to watch a video and demonstrate understanding in class before doing it alone and accountability to demonstrate learning vs. playing the game...how do they ask questions as they go? email the teacher? forums? chats? 3. phase 3 - mastery - same considerations as first 2 but daily choices with weekly goals, layered curriculum (help4teachers.com), assessment and moving on, tracking progress and grading.
- What is the 'Flipped' Classroom and why is it such a hot topic in education?
- Why might it be better to term the 'Flipped Classroom' the 'Shifted Classroom'?
- What are the benefits of 'Flipping'?
- How can I teach when I am absent? How can I participate in the 'Flipping' of my classroom?
- What resources can I use to 'flip' the classroom (Khan Acadmy/YouTube/TeacherTube/etc.)?
- Why 'flipped' learning is SO MUCH MORE than just what you think or have heard (watching at home/working in class).
- What is Screencasting and how can I create them? (Jing, Camtasia, Explain Everything, Educreation, ShowMe)
- The Benefits: Increased student-teacher time, stronger student-teacher relationships, students work at adaptable pace, portable learning, one on one learning
The Flipped classroom is everywhere. And there is a reason it is growing at an exponential rate. Students are learning more and better using this new method of instruction. Come find out what the Flipped classroom is and why you may want to discover more about 'flipping' your classroom!
