IMPORTANT STUDENT INFORMATION AND LOGIN/FIRST DAY DIRECTIONS
Welcome MVHS, Apex & Aventa students! I hope you are looking forward to taking a course in the online format. Before you begin your ‘regular schedule’, there are some requirements here at KHS to take an online course. ALL REQUIREMENTS HERE MAY HAVE A KHS POINT VALUE ATTACHED TO THEM THAT CAN ENHANCE OR DETRACT FROM YOUR MVHS GRADE.
First of all, be aware that starting the first week of the semester, you should be reporting DAILY to the Media Center for your online course hour – UNLESS you are scheduled for 1st hour online in Mrs. Leiker’s room 201-then you MUST report to that classroom DAILY. ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED for your MVHS hour. IF YOU DO NOT ATTEND, OR IF YOU ARE LATE OR LEAVE CLASS EARLY, absences & tardies ARE counted as they are in ALL OTHER COURSES. After four absences, you WILL BE REQUIRED to makeup time in Saturday school as in any other course. The Media Center is the place where most online courses take place.
TO REMAIN ENROLLED IN MVHS, YOU MUST COMPLETE ALL OF THIS CHECKLIST (Feel free to print out and check off as you go):
ð SIGN UP FOR REMIND101 online course notifications using the following directions: REMIND101 INSTRUCTIONS
ð JOIN EDMODO (www.edmodo.com) and check it daily for MVHS announcements and alerts. Be sure to set your ‘notifications’ (upper right corner) if you would like to be notified by email and/or text. The code for the KHS Online Edmodo group (to join) is: iifh6k
ð VISIT MRS. LEIKER’S WEBPAGE at http://jleiker.weebly.com/ and familiarize yourself with the links that are conveniently located for you under the “Michigan Virtual High School Online Links” section of the page.
ð LOG IN TO YOUR MVHS COURSE to check out your online course (or re-log in if you have already been there). Make sure you use your login ID (Bb_ID) to log in with your ID password (Also your ID). This should have been given to you via email in the last week or two. If you did not get that email (check now for it if you haven’t yet checked) or you do not know your Bb_ID, ask Mrs. Leiker and/or Mrs. Jayne for it. Make sure you know this – you need it to log in to your course now. Use the link at the bottom of this page to go to the correct login page (most students are in MVHS, your email should notify you if your course is in Apex or Aventa) and find the course(s) for which you are enrolled.
o Once you have logged in to your online course, take this opportunity to familiarize yourself with the online course environment. It may feel foreign at first – that is normal. The more you experiment with the online environment, the more comfortable you will become with it. Click on ALL the links in your course to discover how your particular instructor organizes the course. Don’t underestimate how important this step is in understanding how this particular course is run.
ð USE YOUR DELICIOUS (or a similar tool) account TO KEEP TRACK OF ALL THE LINKS YOU NEED TO FOLLOW in your online course environment (starting with that login page). If you have forgotten your delicious account information or you don’t have a delicious account because you were never instructed to create one by a teacher, see Mrs. Leiker to help you obtain one (If you already created one for Mrs. Leiker/Micro and forgot your password, please use the link on that page ‘forgot password’ to obtain your delicious account password). You should use SOME method to remember all your logins and passwords for this course and all courses.
ð Find the PACING GUIDE (it will be included in a link from the course syllabus or other location). You MUST print or email a copy of this for BOTH Mrs. Leiker AND yourself. USE THIS GUIDE as a checkpoint for dates you should be meeting. Include this in your agenda book. Make sure your pacing guide is adjusted for the 18 weeks you are given here at KHS. If the pacing guide is written for any other schedule (i.e. 20 weeks, 22 weeks, 36 weeks, etc.) you must adjust it to be finished in 18 weeks (FEWER if you are a senior in second semester – check your senior end date)! If you are organized, placing reminders for due dates within your agenda right now would be very wise. Using an electronic calendar of some sort would also work well (via IPad calendar, cell phone, Google calendar, etc.). If you are enrolled in more than one online course, you must print out/e-mail the pacing guide for EACH course separately. Keep in mind that Kingsford High School would like you to ideally finish your course BEFORE final exam week here at KHS.
ð Read the following FINAL EXAM POLICIES: If you are required to take a final exam in your course, you should plan to do that during your MVHS schedule final exam hour. Exams, mid-terms and other tests that require passwords MUST be proctored here at KHS by a teacher/media center specialist. Parents CANNOT be proctors according to school and MVHS policy. Students who finish their courses BEFORE final exam week can discuss the final exam attendance requirement with Mrs. Leiker only if they meet the following conditions: no instructor email warning of falling behind in class has been received, the student is finished with all assignments with grades entered for every requirement in the course & the student finishes the course with a B or better. In this case the student MUST get placed on & personally sign a list from Mrs. Leiker (see her in room 201) that shows that exam attendance is optional. Any student not finished with their MVHS course by final exams week will be required to attend exam makeup time at 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. every day in room 201.
ð TURN IN/EMAIL YOUR PACING GUIDE TO MRS. LEIKER.
ð ATTEND, LOGIN & WORK ON COURSE EVERY DAY DURING MVHS HOUR-ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED for your MVHS hour.
ð ADD MRS. LEIKER’S EMAIL ([email protected]) to your agenda book, contact list or some other location that is easy to obtain. If you have any questions and/or problems regarding your online course, please email Mrs. Leiker immediately for assistance. She will do her best to resolve any issues or questions you have. Most questions will probably go directly to your online instructor but your mentor is the ‘go between’ and must be informed of your class pacing schedule and grades as you go. We keep this information on file at KHS in order for you to gain credit in your course so it is important that you stay in contact with Mrs. Leiker.
ð DO NOT PANIC & USE YOUR RESOURCES - Try to remember that every online course is going to look confusing at first. Almost all online instructors understand that it is going to take a week or so for you to get familiarized with their site and online course content. Try not to panic and remember that you have multiple resources available to you. Do not fear sending emails to your online instructor with questions. That is what they are there for! And many of them use that as an indication that you actually care about and are working hard on their course! They have probably received the same question numerous times so you are most likely not the only student with that question. This brings up another tip – USE your FELLOW ONLINE CLASSMATES as well. They too have gone through some of the same questions and may have already somehow solved them and are happy to answer how they did it IN A DISCUSSION POSTING. The great thing about an online course is that you have continual use of these great communication tools and have joined a ‘community’ of learners. Also remember to continually check your announcement board for updates about the course and answers to questions that all students may have. Feel free to use the edmodo wall as well to talk to other classmates, ask questions regarding online courses or to just simply vent about a course.
ð FILL IN THIS FORM: Expect to receive an email, remind101 and/or edmodo notification from Mrs. Leiker in the coming week or two (and regularly throughout the semester) informing you of course requirements to gain credit here at KHS (i.e. reporting grades and regular check-ins).
If you have any questions for Mrs. Leiker, please do not hesitate to ask. Good luck in your online course! Online learning is definitely a growing trend and a great way to earn credits for high school, college and beyond. Welcome to 21st century learning!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Leiker – Kingsford High School Room 201 ([email protected])
