Read the following article: http://blogs.hbr.org/2010/03/the-world-needs-more-social-entrepreneurs/
We will be discussing the article in class. Who are the 'change makers' that the article refers to? Would people involved in the Bully Project last year or the Mock Accident be considered change makers? Would those who start new activities, get involved in new projects or begin or participate in clubs be considered change makers? The article states, "Any city or country that doesn’t help its youth master these basic skills is finished, its companies and institutions disadvantaged. " What do you think they mean by that? The article also mentioned that groups of students can 'tip the culture of a school'. In what ways you have seen change tip the culture of this school? One of the reasons I believe Twitter is the most powerful and intelligent social network is because it created the 'follow' button.
There is a disturbing trend on certain social media sites such as Ask to allow people to freely speak in a negative and derogatory manor. Social media feed of the follow vs. friend. Teaching through community of non-followers. Visit a Google a Day and take the Google challenge for today. How did you do? Are you a good googler?
Nowadays the ability to search information, or be a good 'googler' is evident in society. Google actually tests its potential employees on this skill. They think it is more important to be able to find an answer than it is to know the answer. What about you? Have you googled answers before? There is no time in my adult life that somebody is going to tell me not to use Google when posed with a problem or challenge. The truth is that in adult life, Google is a daily part of solving work related issues, problems and research. What are your thoughts on this? In my vision of the future world, our elementary students will learn that there is nothing they can't do or learn with the power of the internet and the attitude that nobody can stop them from their goals. They should exist in a world where nobody can make them feel stupid because learning is available to them anyplace and anytime and it is in their control to learn what they would like to learn. Coming from a family whose parents didn't attend college, I often felt like I was underestimated by teachers and others who figured that since my parents didn't go to college, neither would I. I don't blame them for their thinking but I don't want anybody else to feel the same. It's all about attitude and what you want in life. Especially with the ability to search anything and have so much education free online.
Analyze the following quote which can be found on Mrs. Leiker's classroom door. What do you think this quote means? Has there ever been something you didn't yet learn how to do that made you feel stupid? With the power of the internet at your fingertips and the ability to search virtually everything and learn what you want to learn, do you feel like you have the ability to never feel stupid again? In that sense is genius really just an attitude? Write on this topic for five minutes minimum in your journal blog. There is currently a TREMENDOUS power that Norway High School students (and ALL NVAS students but high school will be the 'models') hold in receiving 1:1 technology this school year. In the news, if one were to complete a search on facebook (and/or social media) and suicide they would find THOUSANDS of stories of teens committing suicide from bullying and/or cyberbullying. Schools, teachers, parents and many other adults hold FEAR about social media sites mostly because this is how they learn about them. They do not use nor examine or study much about them. The thing is SOCIAL MEDIA IS GREAT! It allows so many things positive to happen. You probably know how Twitter started a revolution in one country to overthrow dictatorship. What if Norway decided to be a headlining story proving the OPPOSITE about social media? That if given the opportunity to use social media on their devices but also given lessons on it, it could be used in a positive fashion. That if taught correctly, social media can be an amazing tool for communication, education and even promoting peace in the world. Do you think it could even be national news worthy? I do!
Watch this video on students charged with FELONY offenses and parents who may also be charged Watch this video on questions related to motive and responsibility in teaching digital citizenship Check out this other article that also just happened but got lost in the mix of the more popular story being read For your journal blog today, please write about these stories and your thoughts and feelings on these kinds of issues that affect YOU and YOUR generation. Do you think proper education can help prevent some of this? Do you think Norway could be a model for the UP, state, nation and even the world? |
